Stichproben is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year; at the same time, Special Issue 1/2026 marks the publication of its 50th edition. Since its first issue (1/2001), Stichproben has been available in Gold Open Access. As a journal based at the Institute for African Studies, it is supported by a dedicated editorial team and published independently by the Stichproben association. To support the work of Stichproben in the long term, you can become a Stichproben supporter by taking out an annual subscription.

You will receive two printed copies of Stichproben per year. If you become a supporter by January 15, 2026, you can choose three copies of your choice from all issues published to date and receive them free of charge with Special Issue 50 1/2026.

Stichproben - Vienna Journal of African Studies

The ‘Stichproben – Vienna Journal of African Studies’ is a peer-reviewed journal published twice a year by the registered association Stichproben at the Department of African Studies, University of Vienna, Austria. Stichproben contributes to debates on recent and historical issues of African Studies. The contributions in Stichproben are aimed at both a scientific audience as well as a general interested public. The articles in the journal concern both Africa and its diaspora and many of the contributions often cross the boundaries of individual disciplines.

The main focus of Stichproben is in the fields of African contemporary history, politics and literatures. Book reviews and review articles complement the research articles of each issue. Stichproben provides a platform for interdisciplinary exchange among scholars of different backgrounds and origins and allow authors to publish in a number of languages like German, English, French, and Kiswahili. The Stichproben are particularly eager to support young scholars and students in their research and publication activities. Our journal is a medium to enhance the visibility of the discipline of African Studies.

Stichproben follows an open access policy. Articles are published under the terms of the Creative Commons
Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). All articles are published online open access without time delay and can be accessed via the website without a registration process and are iavailable for download as PDF files on our homepage. Long-term archiving is accomplished by using the PHAIDRA service of the University of Vienna.
