Stichproben - Vienna Journal of African Studies


The Stichproben – Vienna Journal of African Studies is a peer-reviewed journal published twice a year by the registered association Stichproben at the Department of African Studies, University of Vienna, Austria. Stichproben contributes to debates on past and recent issues in African Studies. The contributions in Stichproben are aimed at both a scientific audience as well as a general interested public. The articles in the journal concern both Africa and its diaspora, with many contributions crossing the boundaries of individual disciplines.

The contributions focus on African history, politics, languages and literatures. The journal publishes original research articles, as well as review articles,  book reviews and occasional papers. Stichproben provides a platform for interdisciplinary exchange among scholars of different backgrounds and origins and allow authors to publish in a number of languages like German, English, French, and Swahili. The Stichproben editorial team is particularly eager to support young scholars in their research and publication activities. The journal is a medium to enhance the visibility of the disciplines of African Studies.

Since its founding in the year 2001, Stichproben follows an open access policy. Articles are published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License ( All articles are published online open access without time delay and can be accessed via the website without a registration process and are iavailable available for download as PDF files on our homepage. Long-term archiving is accomplished by using the PHAIDRA service of the University of Vienna.

Stichproben requests neither article processing charges (APCs) nor article submission charges. We believe that these measures, coupled with our open access policy, will allow more researchers from African universities to contribute to the academic discourses disseminated by Stichproben.
